After nearly eight years of rescuing horses, and a lifetime of witnessing what humans are capable of doing to animals, I have seen enough cruelty and suffering to lose faith in our species more than once.
But as well as that, I have seen people dedicate their weekends, their savings, their energy and sometimes their entire lives to helping animals. Often those they've never even met. People who ask for nothing in return except the chance to help a living being who needs it.
I see that spirit in the movement to protect our Brumbies. Thousands of people standing together. Refusing to be silenced. Refusing to accept that unnecessary suffering is justified.
That gives me hope, because compassion is contagious. When we come together to make the world a more compassionate, safer and kinder place, the evil of humanity is shrouded in light.
May we never stop choosing compassion.
