The Invasive Species Council is an independent, non-government environmental advocacy organisation that campaigns for policies it believes are the most "cost-efficient" for reducing introduced animal populations. But why would cost be the primary consideration when animal welfare, ecological complexity and the impacts on non-target wildlife and threatened species are also at stake?
Is it just me, or is anyone else noticing the running theme in their approach to "population management"?
Across Kosciuszko National Park, 1080 poison baiting affects more than its intended targets, as a huge range of native wildlife may be directly or indirectly exposed. Species that could be affected include eastern grey kangaroos, red-necked and swamp wallabies, wombats, possums, gliders, bandicoots, native rats and mice (including the Broad-toothed Rat and Smoky Mouse), spotted-tailed quolls, goannas, skinks, snakes, cockatoos (including the Gang-gang Cockatoo), rosellas, ravens, currawongs, wedge-tailed eagles, falcons, kites, owls and other scavenging or predatory birds. Sensitive amphibians may also be affected indirectly. Herbivores and omnivores may consume bait directly, while predators and scavengers may be exposed through poisoned prey or carcasses.
Australia and New Zealand are among the very few countries that continue to use 1080 for broad-scale vertebrate pest control, while most other countries have prohibited or severely restricted its use because of concerns about its risks to non-target animals and animal welfare.
But animal welfare is certainly not a priority to the ISC, the RSPCA and the Australian government.
