The Fight To Save Our Australian Wild Horses

Oct 12, 2026

For years, Australians have been told that wild brumbies are one of the greatest environmental threats to Kosciuszko National Park, and that our taxpayer money must be used to fund the aerial shooting of these heritage horses.

We're told this is necessary to protect alpine wetlands and riverbanks. But at the very same time, the Federal Government is undertaking one of the largest engineering projects in Australian history inside the same national park.

Snowy Hydro 2.0 is a $42 BILLION project involving massive tunnels, major roadworks, power infrastructure, vegetation clearing, and the excavation of millions of cubic metres of rock.

Concerns have been raised about impacts on groundwater, wetlands, wildlife habitat, erosion and the threat to endangered species.

Yet we're told the brumbies are the problem.

The footprint left by horses is tiny compared to the enormous scale of human development occurring in the park.

Then there's the question of the numbers used to justify the cull. Estimates have increased over three-fold on one year, raising serious questions about their accuracy.

The ancestors of today's brumbies helped build this country. They carried settlers, worked alongside stockmen, served in war, and became part of Australia's cultural identity.

In 2018, the NSW Parliament recognised their heritage value through the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act. Yet only a few years later, these same horses are being shot from helicopters. If they are worthy of heritage recognition, surely they are worthy of humane management.

Alternatives exist: fertility control, trapping, retraining, rehoming and relocation. These options deserve far greater investment than endless aerial culling.

The first step is awareness. So many Australians have no idea this is happening.

Please help spread the word. Share their story. Start conversations. Raise awareness. Together we can help stop the suffering.

It's time for change.
